The Buddha said that meditation to establish mindfulness produces fruitful results.
It is very important to understand why beings are reborn in the next life by their own karma (as discussed in Dhamma Letter No. 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, & 39), and why we should practice meditation in our lives. In Dhamma letter No. 56, 57, 58, & 59, we looked at the stages of enlightenment for Nibbana, the state of greatest happiness. If you experience the happiness of complete peace rather than happiness through simple sensual desires, you can perceive why the results of mindfulness meditation practice are so great.
Quote in DN 22(Maha-Satipatthana sutta)
"If anyone, bhikkhus, practices the establishment of contemplation of these four things in an accurate way for seven years, he can expect one of two fruits. He attains the highest wisdom (Arahant: a fully awakened One) in this very life, or if some of the foundations of the five heaps remain, he can expect the stage of Anagami (non-returner).
Bhikkhus, it may not be seven years. Bhikkhus, it may not be six years. Bhikkhus, it may not be five years. Bhikkhus, it may not be four years. Bhikkhus, it may not be three years. Bhikkhus, it may not be two years. Bhikkhus, it may not be one year. Bhikkhus, it may not be seven months. Bhikkhus, it may not be six months. Bhikkhus, it may not be five months. Bhikkhus, it may not be four months. Bhikkhus, it may not be three months. Bhikkhus, it may not be two months. Bhikkhus, it may not be a half month. For this reason, monks, I have said the following: This is the one and only way to purify sentient beings, to overcome grief and sorrow, to extinguish suffering and dislike, to attain the path of truth, and to attain Nibbana directly.
What must be premised here is the right understanding and application method. If you follow this method roughly in your opinion, you will not be able to achieve the results affirmed by the Buddha. Its prerequisite is the practice of the Three studies and the Eightfold Path, as suggested in the previous Dhamma Letter.
Firstly, by keeping the precepts and purifying the mind, it is possible to develop right samadhi and build right wisdom. More time may be required depending on the individual Pāramī. Therefore, small actions that can build up Pāramī should start. (Dhamma letter No. 10)
I hope that everyone can achieve their respective benefits by learning and practicing the meditation methods suggested by the Buddha through the establishment of mindfulness.
To be continued..
May you cultivate your Sati continuously!
